Glasgow Selected as Host City for 2026 Commonwealth Games

Glasgow has been announced as the host city for the 2026 Commonwealth Games. In response to rising costs and a focus on sustainability, the upcoming games will see a reduction in the number of sports included. This decision reflects an effort to maintain the relevance of the Commonwealth Games as it approaches its 100th anniversary in 2030.

The 2026 games will notably exclude several sports that have been part of past games, such as wrestling, cricket, squash, table tennis, badminton, and hockey. The only sports that will remain as permanent fixtures in the 2026 games are athletics and swimming.

This scaled-down approach is seen as a crucial strategy to keep the Commonwealth Games movement viable and relevant in the lead-up to its centenary celebrations.
